After their first game of the season, junior Hunter Couch is confident in the Scrapper football team’s performance.

“We’re good at what we do,” Couch, an offensive lineman, said.

The Scrappers proved Couch correct in their first game of the season, a 48-21 victory over Hope.

According to Couch, persistence was a theme of head coach Tim Perry’s pregame speech.

“We’re going to be the ones that are going to hit them and never quit until the end,” Couch said, summarizing Perry.

Persistence in the Hope game seemed to consist in a series of tradeoffs between the Scrapper offense and defense.

The offense started the game with an explosive first half, scoring 48 points. In the second half, the defense kept a Hope offense trying to fight their way out of a desperate situation at bay, only allowing 21 points.

The Scrapper offense racked up 260 yards rushing and 329 yards passing for 589 yards of total offense. Junior quarterback Joel Hendry threw for 320 yards during the game. Classmates Tesean Green and Jakaree Gaines were his most frequent targets. Green caught 6 passes for 79 yards and rushed for 102 yards on 17 carries. Gaines caught 9 passes for 99 yards and rushed 23 times for 161 yards.

The Scrapper defense was led by seniors Max Pratt and Jonathan Nguyen. Pratt collected 11 tackles and 3 assists, and Nguyen had 8 tackles and 5 assists.

The teams never scored during the same half. The Scrappers scored 21 points in the first quarter and 27 points in the second quarter. The Hope Bobcats scored a touchdown in the third quarter and 15 points in the fourth quarter.

Couch’s favorite part of the game was the first half.

“I thought the whole first half was all-around great,” he said.

After seeing his teammates’ performances, Couch is optimistic about the season.

“We’ve got a pretty good chance of making it far [in the playoffs],” he said.
